Improving Mental Well-being and Quality of Lives of Persons Affected by Leprosy or Buruli Ulcer
RedAid Nigeria & Leprosy Research Initiative
This documentary highlights the journey of RedAid Nigeria's groundbreaking project, "Improving Mental Well-being and Quality of Lives of Persons Affected by Leprosy or Buruli Ulcer," implemented across five states in Southern Nigeria. For 48 months, this project, funded by the Leprosy Research Initiative in the Netherlands, addressed the mental health and livelihood needs of individuals affected by these neglected tropical diseases.
Through innovative strategies such as the introduction of Community Lay Counselors—a novel approach in Nigeria—and vocational training programs, this initiative brought much-needed psychological and economic support to underserved communities. The project empowered individuals, reduced depression levels, and helped build sustainable livelihoods for persons affected by leprosy and Buruli ulcer.
Watch as affected persons, community leaders, and project participants share their inspiring testimonies of how this project transformed their lives, fostering resilience and restoring dignity.
