Infectious Thoughts interview: ISNTD Infectious Thoughts Interview on FGS & HIV

Pr. Alan Fenwick (Imperial College London)

Dr. Jutta Reinhard-Rupp (Director Merck Global Health Institute)

Young women and teenagers suffering from the genital form of schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD), are at a four to five-time higher risk of contracting HIV when they become sexually active. Conversely, treating patients early on with a cheap and proven treatment for schistosomiasis can dramatically reduce rates of HIV transmission in areas where both diseases are endemic. There is a strong case for both the HIV and NTD communities to ramp up collaboration in epidemiology, diagnosis, advocacy and treatment.

ISNTD Infectious Thoughts Interview on FGS & HIV: What is the linkage between Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) & HIV? Are FGS patients at risk of HIV infection? What can the NTD and HIV communities do to work together? How can the HIV and FGS efforts combine to counter this?

Pr. Alan Fenwick (Imperial College London) and Dr. Jutta Reinhard-Rupp (Director Merck Global Health Institute) speak to the ISNTD to discuss this and call out to the global HIV community to work together.

Recorded in London on November 23rd 2017.
